Freeze Drying of Botanicals
Good Housekeeping Magazine and NBC Dateline recently rated freeze-drying the best preservation method available today…
Your wedding bouquet is a sentimental reminder of your wedding day. Lacewing Arts & Flowers can create a keepsake using the very flowers you carried down the aisle with our flower preservation services.
We start by taking pictures of the bouquet or arrangement from several angles so that it may be reconstructed as you wish. You may choose to have the entire bouquet or only a portion of the flowers included. Depending on the size and shape of the display you choose, it may not be possible to duplicate the bouquet exactly as it was originally designed. We then re-hydrate and disassemble the bouquet so that each individual flower can be pre-treated according to its type and color.
Pre-treatment is used to help flowers hold their natural color and open the cell structure. The flowers will then be placed in a holding freezer until there is room in the freeze dryer. The freeze dryer slowly extracts all moisture, maintaining the flowers natural size and unique shape. Freeze drying removes moisture at extremely low temperatures under a vacuum, so flowers take approximately two weeks to process in the machine. After being freeze dried, the flowers are treated with a clear coating to protect them from sunlight and humidity. Ribbons and other accessories are tagged cleaned, pressed and stored until ready to be included in the display.
You can choose from a framed dome, centerpiece or shadow box in a variety of shapes and sizes for display, and you can include your wedding invitation, photo or other memorabilia of that special day. All of our display coverings are UV-protected, and matting is acid-free and of archival quality.
Freeze-dried flowers will keep that special occasion in your memory forever
Caring for the wedding bouquet to be preserved
You may want to think about having a second bouquet if you wish to throw the bouquet after the ceremony or reception. Keep in mind that freeze drying will not be able to improve the condition of the flowers if they are crushed or mishandled. It’s best to place them in a cooler insulated from direct contact with ice during the reception. We can replace some the individual flowers that are damaged depending on availability or substitute with similar flowers that might present a better finished product.
It is best to get your flowers to us within 24 hours. Place them in a refrigerator, preferably on a bottom shelf. Mist with water to keep them moist, but do not let them freeze.
Transport them in a cooler with layers of paper to protect them from the ice. We will freeze them in a holding freezer, then transfer them immediately into the freeze dryer before they can be exposed to the air and begin a thawing process.
Although any botanical can be freeze-dried, some flowers do better than others due to their individual form and cell structure. For instance, flowers in the daisy family, chrysanthemums, dahlias and bovardia have petals attached by very small sockets, which can break down with freeze drying and loosen the petals. On the other hand, flowers that are perceived as being fragile, such as orchids, freeze dry very well. Our consultants will be happy to answer your questions and address any concerns you have regarding what flowers will work best.
Flower care is essential for your flowers to stay in a good condition. Here are some tips that will help your flowers make it through a long day:
If you know that you want to have your flowers preserved, let your florist know. If they have any questions, they can always call us.
Hand-tied bouquets:
Hand-tied bouquets most often do not have a water source.
Let your florist know that you will need a vase with water to put your bouquet in at the reception. Just place the stems in the vase.
If your bouquet has a ribbon, it is okay to get it wet; it can be cleaned.
A few florists will use an oasis holder with the stems sticking out of the bottom. If this is your bouquet, follow directions for cascade bouquets.
Cascade bouquets:
Cascade bouquets have a water source. It is in the oasis holder. It is great for the flowers that have their own stems.
When you get to the reception site, let someone take your bouquet and put some water in the holder.
